Server’s Sounds: Top Ten Countdown – 6/30/10
Besides one particular album that I love, this has been a pretty slow music week. But it never stops me from finding new music. I dug deep this week, to find some hidden gems, but there are some songs that make their way back for another go, 10 to 1 this is the countdown…
10. Islands by The xx
I guess I pick this one as my indie song of the week. It took a really long time for me to get into The xx. The beat and vocals are very on the low side and goes with this melodic jam to ride through the song to the end. I do like the music video purgatory idea they had with the video, if you don’t get what that means, give a video a watch and then you’ll get it.
9. Shake It Out by Manchester Orchestra
This rock song ain’t for the poppy wannabes. It’s really raw and hardcore, without pushing into metal. The best way I can describe it is all of the instruments and vocals sound dirty. The song also seem to split in half with both parts almost being able to be stand alone singles.
8. Deathbed by There For Tomorrow
This is basically emo song of the week from me. Though There for Tomorrow is a pretty decent band. They really only have one type of sound to them, which makes hearing one of their songs like hearing all of them. Also they have this recurring theme of blue laser lights in their videos. Oh well.
7. Crash by Fit for Rivals
Another song that gets me because of guitar riffs. This is the first time that I’ve listened to Fit for Rivals and they seem to be a mix of Hoobastank and Shinedown. Gotta love the headbanging music.
6. You’ve Changed by Sia
I’ve actually heard this song way back in December, but gave it another listen recently with Sia’s album release and found it’s actually pretty good. It’s just another poppy electronica song, but with really good vocals. The music video also gave me a smile, with the paper cutout “Rock Band” game theme that they had going.
5. The Fire by The Roots (feat. John Legend)
This week I’ll post the regular version of The Fire by The Roots to compare with the remix that I posted last week. This single falls a few spots because of all “new” songs I’ve found over the past week.
4. The Ghost Inside by Broken Bells
I have a feeling that The Ghost Inside will tumble out of the Top Ten either next week or the week after. It had a good run though, can’t wait for new Broken Bells whenever that happens again.
3. It’s Working by MGMT
There’s just something about MGMT, that works so well. They’re basically bringing back psychedelic rock and only they can do it. It’s Working works really well with building up the momentum of the song, starting slow and reaching the peak at the end. Oh yeah like all MGMT music videos, it’s random, yet awesome.
2. Love the Way You Lie by Eminem (feat. Rihanna)
Still no music video and still no official single link, so instead I found a live version of it from the Activision E3 event, enjoy.
1. House Party by 3OH!3
We’ll this was the album that I was psyched for and it didn’t disappoint. The only downside is that they release so many digital singles that it seems that I’ve heard most of the album already. So instead of sticking Deja Vu or any of the other singles on here at #1, I chose this one. Nothing much to it and it’s kind of stupid, but you know they’ll be blasting this at the parties one day. That’s the countdown for this week, check in next week to see what’s new and what I’m into.
Server’s Sounds: Top Ten Countdown – 6/25/10
The Countdown comes later than usual this week because of all the NBA Draft news. It was a decent new music release week, and no I refuse to listen to the new Miley Cyrus album. But enough of that painful image, here’s this week’s top ten…
10. On Melancholy Hill by Gorillaz
I doubt that any of the Gorillaz songs have any meaning at all, but it doesn’t matter cause the music is really good. The sound is like this easy-listening beat that seems to fit in with a kid’s cartoon. The music video just shows off more good stuff from the Gorillaz animation team.
9. Airplanes by B.o.B (feat. Hayley Williams)
One of my favorite songs of the past few months, makes its return to the countdown, finally with a music video to accompany it. The video itself uses a lot of silhouettes and light effects. It’s actually really artsy and unlike most hip hop videos today. Also it kinda looks like Hayley is rocking the Chun Li hairstyle but with her flame hair.
8. ADD SUV by Uffie (feat. Pharrell)
I’m a big Uffie fan, while Gaga and Ke$ha has their more mainstream friendly Electropop, it still nice to know someone is sticking with the pure electronica sound. Then throw in some Pharrell and that’s just pure awesomeness. I do have to say nothing much to the video though, why does Uffie get arrested by the end of it?
7. Figure It Out by VersaEmerge
Half a year ago, I was hyping the release of VersaEmerge’s first album, Fixed At Zero. Well it finally dropped this week, and my opinion is, it’s alright. I do have an idea of what their going for now though, they’re basically the second coming of Evanescence (whatever happened to them?). I do still think that Sierra Kusterbeck has a fantastic voice. Anyways Figure It Out is my favorite track off of the new album, take a listen.
6. REVOFEV by Kid Cudi
You think that Cudi would take a break after releasing a hit album and guest starring on a TV show right? Nope, Cudi is expected to drop a new album later this year, Man On the Moon II. REVOFEV (revolution of evolution) is the preview track for it and it’s definitely more good stuff. It strangely reminds me of the opening track from the show that he was on.
5. Damn Rough Night by Artist Vs. Poet
Artist Vs. Poet is the next up and coming pop punk band. They’re currently touring the with the Warped Tour. I still like their song Runaway better, but for new stuff from them, this is pretty good.
4. Gettin’ Over You by David Guetta (feat. Fergie, Chris Willis, & LMFAO)
Not sure why this song resurged in the countdown from uncharting to 4. Go back to 2 weeks ago and you can read up on my justification for this song, but besides that nothing new to say about this one. I did learn that there are waaay too many versions of this one song (not even remixes).
3. The Fire by The Roots (feat. John Legend)
I chose to include the remixed version that included verses by B.o.B, but this had to be one of the best new singles of the week. I only recently discovered The Roots from watching them on Late Nights with Jimmy Fallon and damn they are really good. This track is just a step up in terms of hip hop music, just amazing lyrics mixed with REAL music from REAL instruments. When you’re good, who needs f’ing autotune.
2. The Ghost Inside by Broken Bells
Yep, it’s still the best indie song for me. And it’s already lasted longer than the last Broken Bells song that I liked. My thoughts on this song are in last week’s countdown if you want to see them.
1. Love the Way You Lie by Eminem (feat. Rihanna)
OMG for once in a long time, I agree with the #1 song on iTunes. It seems like Eminem alternates between releasing a comedic album and a serious album with every other release. What’s weird is that it’s not even an official single yet, but it’s topping number one anyways. It’s a good balance between Em’s rhymes and just enough Rihanna (her last album sucked bad). It’s basically a love song, but more meaningful and more intense. So score for hip hop being real this week! (Warning – Most Likely YouTube will mute this copy of the song and you’ll have to find another one)
Server’s Sounds: Top Ten Countdown – 6/16/10
As I’m compiling last minute gaming news from the final days of E3, I’m gonna pause and do another Server’s Sounds post. Hopefully this post will have more music videos.
10. California Gurls by Katy Perry (ft. Snoop Dogg)
Ok this is an absolutely terrible but perfect for radio play song. But the music video was released the other day and it is absolutely outrageous. Trust me you’ll never look at the game Candyland the same or it will become a sexual thing now.
9. I Was a Teenage Anarchist by Against Me!
It took me awhile to get into this one, but it’s finally grew on me. Also this video fits the song pretty well.
8. Make Me Wanna Die by The Pretty Reckless
Got nothing new to say about this one, tell you the truth I’ll probably get bored of it in a few days.
7. You Stupid Girl by Framing Hanley
Ditto with this one as well, though this one has a bit more staying power than #8.
6. Find Your Love by Drake
Drake’s “first” album was released the other day, this is my favorite track from it. Reminds me a little of Heartbreak by Kanye West, possibly since it was produced by Kanye. Took a quick listen of the new album and most of the songs sound the same, oh well. I think the music video is about falling in love with a hooker or something.
5. Love Dealer by Esmée Denters (ft. Justin Timberlake)
Finally got a listen to what Esmee Denters was all about. And I kinda like what I hear. This one is the lastest single I could find from her and she teams with the guy who signed her from YouTube. Give it a listen.
4. Love Like Woe by The Ready Set
If you read a post i did a few days ago about a game on Decaydance’s website, it highly featured this song. I personally think it’s pretty unique in the work of Punk Pop songs, mixing in some hip hop in, but not a lot to be “hip hop”. Also according to this music video, in hipster punk world zombies are people in black hoodies with glowy green eyes.
3. Superbad (11:34) by Travie McCoy
This one will definitely be the next single, but Travie right now is still riding the fame off of Billionaire, but expect a radioplay of this one coming at you soon and maybe a music video?
2. Déjà Vu by 3OH!3
2 more weeks until I can finally get my hands on this album! Not much to say about this song in particular, but it’s still one of my favs on my playlist currently. The 3OH!3 single of the week was a song called Double Vision by the way, you can get it on iTunes, but I personally thought it was meh.
1. The Ghost Inside by Broken Bells
How could I’ve missed this one! Broken Bells is the collaboration between Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) and James Mercer (The Shins) and they make incredible sounding music together. The Ghost Inside has this etherial futuristic sound mixed with some really good vocals. The music video also has the lovely Christina Hendricks in it, it’s the total package and that’s why it’s #1.
