Server’s Top Ten Countdown – 2/4/10

iAs you noticed it’s been a pretty busy term for me, leaving this blog in the dust. But I’ve come back for just a bit to do another Top Ten Countdown. It’s been a pretty good music month, so the countdown should be completely fresh, so let’s get this thing started with song number ten…

10. MC’s Can Kiss – Uffie

I totally forgot how I discovered Uffie, but there is just something about her music that is amusing. She is from the MC/DJ crowd which totally should make a revival since their music is just sick. It’s been awhile since Uffie has released anything from her EPs, her first full album ever is going to drop this year and I’m totally looking forward to it. Uffie has been doing what Ke$ha been releasing, but years earlier and with a House beat instead of pop.

9. All the Pretty Girls – Fun

Really simple band name guys…fun. The first thing I thought when I discovered this song for the first time is…hey these guys sound a lot like Queen, but fresher. Magazines actually have been comparing Fun to Panic! at the Disco, which I could totally see. The song combines a good blend of guitar riffs, interesting lyrics, and a good rise and fall feel from the violin. Welcome to mainstream indie Fun, if there really is such thing as mainstream indie.

8. Doin’ Somethin’ Right – Van Atta High

The lastest pop punk band that I’ve found is Van Atta High. They’ve been slowly gaining fame and played the big concerts of Vans Warp Tour and The Bamboozle in their homestate New Jersey. I think these guys have a bright future especially with their new album dropping soon.

7. A Lifeless Ordinary (Need A Little Help) - Motion City Soundtrack

I’ll have to admit I didn’t like Motion City Soundtrack’s new album My Dinosaur Life, it was pretty weak compared to their old stuff. A Lifeless Ordinary pretty much is the best track off the album mostly because it resembles their old stuff the best. But to tell you the truth once again, I’ll probably get bored of this one within the next two weeks.

6. Stupid Love Letter - The Friday Night Boys

With Fall Out Boy disbanded today, Fueled by Ramen needs a new pop punk band and it might be The Friday Night Boys. Getting your songs inserted into movies is a good start. Stuttering which I used to discover these guys was in American Pie: The Book of Love and this new one Stupid Love Letter will be Kristen Bell’s new flick When in Rome. Pretty good start if I do say so myself.

5. Sleepyhead – Passion Pit

I have no idea why I like this song, but it is really awesome! You’ve all heard this song, but if you can’t put your finger on where you’ve heard it (psss it’s from the Palm Pixi commercial). The commercial doesn’t do it justice, since it doesn’t get to the hooks of the song, in which they just bombard you with this mix of electro musical goodness. And I will never know what the hell they are sampling for this song, but it just works.

4. Stylo – Gorillaz feat. Bobby Womack and Mos Def

YESSS!!! THE GORILLAZ ARE BACK! Why? We’ll never know. It’s kind of weird, you have to listen to this one a few times, but it just gets better and better the more you listen. It also sounds sooo different from their old stuff from Demon Days and Gorillaz. Mos Def being on the track is just icing on the cake. For me this is one of the most anticpated albums of twenty ten for me.

3. Blah Blah Blah – Ke$ha feat. 3OH!3

I don’t think Ke$ha is a talented artist or anything, her music is just funny. All of her songs off of the #1 best seller Animal is in someway singing about how she wants to get boned by a random stranger in a club. The beat isn’t anything special, but it’s poppy enough to keep my ears happy. It was a toss up between Blah Blah Blah and Your Love is My Drug for Ke$ha song of the week, but come on Ke$ha and 3OH!3 is a match made in heaven.

2. Nothin’ on You – B.o.B feat. Bruno Mars

B.o.B and Kid Cudi to me are the saviors of hip hop. Lil Wayne’s rock album dropped this week and that was just a huge middle finger to music. I’m just glad that B.o.B is bringing back just plain rap combined with a R&B hook. Also whoever Bruno Mars is he sounds so much like Bobby Valentino and that’s is pretty amazing. This is my pick for the “song you play to your girlfriend” of the week. B.o.B will finally get his chance to shine with his much delayed album to be released this year.

1. We Love Like Vampires – Sparks the Rescue

Been listening to this one for a few weeks now and I’m still not bored of it, that definitely gets you the #1 spot. Sparks the Rescue is my favorite newly discovered band of January. Sparks the Rescue’s vampire video is actually getting the attention of MTV so don’t be surprise if they get super popular in the future. Song isn’t too shabby either, take a listen and see if I’m right or not.

Just Got Down To Watching: Long Weekend Edition

Coming to the end of my Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, I thought I would spit out another blog post (aka procrastinating). In my oh so large video queue, I knocked out three on this list over the weekend. Amazingly all three of them were pretty worth watching. They haven’t been released on DVD yet so keep your eyes and ears out for them, because I would totally recommend seeing all of them. So let’s get it on with I FINALLY GOT DOWN TO WATCHING…

Whip It

So to kick start Drew Barrymoore’s career as a movie director, she decides to work on a flick about rollerderby. Quite a strange pick, but amazingly this turned out to be a pretty good movie. The story is basically about the rebellious teenager trying to find out what she is all about. But besides all of that, the star is Ellen Page and out of nowhere she got really hot. Actually most of the actresses are “hot” in this movie, not “pretty”, but hot. There’s just something about a chick in fishnets and rollerblades clotheslining another girl that is a total turn-on. On the flipside, it is a story about female empowerment, but it doesn’t just bombard you with that message, nor is it even that important of a theme to the film. But the best thing really about this movie is that it’s a coming of age comedy film without all that pop punk music and the now stereotypical awkward male protagonist. Hey I don’t see any other roller derby teen flicks out there, that what’s makes this movie feel fresh.

Sherlock Holmes

Out of the blue, Guy Ritchie decides to make a film based on the of so popular detective Sherlock Holmes. Amazingly Ritchie brings his London underground flair to the film and everything amazingly clicks. The dynamic between Holmes and Watson, played by Robert Downing Jr. and Jude Law, works very well with them more as equals instead of Holmes being the expert and Watson the bumbling side-kick. Mark Strong (a Ritchie film vet) protrays a very sinister villian and makes it almost seem that Holmes can’t possibly win this one. In this film, Holmes deductions are protrayed in a very interesting way: from when he fights to when he’s piecing things together, there is is this slow down rewind with voice-over, that gives the audience complete knowledge of how Holmes is looking at things. The pacing of the film seemed really fast especially near the end, and the goddam Ritchie trademark cliffhanger was kind of annoying. Beside that it was still an enjoyable action packed humorous film, a definite watch.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

There is just something about stop-motion films that are just visually fun to watch. Fantastic Mr. Fox is an adaptation of one of Roald Dahl’s first books about the lives of anthropomorphic woodland creatures against human farmers. There were many good animated films this past year and Fantastic Mr. Fox was no exception (though it did past most people by this past November). The most interesting thing about the stop-motion was the constant changing of the camera persepective, which had absolutely amazing flow for the type of animation that it was. What steals the show is the voice acting of George Clooney as Mr. Fox, he’s quick witty and brings the charm of a character similar to Danny Ocean to an animated fox. The movie is aimed at children, but like a Pixar film, just about anyone who watches it will enjoy it. It is the right balance of humor and suspense with a terrific story, the movie is just well, fantastic (soooo cliché, i know!).

But yeah hopefully this will help you on your movie selection process in the future, so yeah back to work for me.

interRacials Review: Daybreakers

So I ended up seeing Daybreakers, the latest movie riding the vampire movie bandwagon that debuted this weekend. But is it a Twilight or is it more a Tru Blood, well here’s another edition of interRacials Review…

Server’s Review-

Well this one differentiates itself from the other vampire media by setting itself in the future (well like 7 years from now, but hey that’s still “the future”). Basically same-old backstory of virus that spreads turning mostly everybody into vampires. The need to feed has led them to capture humans, store them, and harvest them. Moral dilemma for a few and a solution needs to be found as the normal human population is dwindling. The first thing you will totally thank the script writer on is that the vampires are the classic kind (bloodsucking, fangs, burns from the sun, pale, no reflection, weird glowy eyes). The suspense/survival story is basically the same as other post-apocalyptic films you’ve seen (especially I Am Legend). What is kind of fresh, is the main perspective is from the vampire side and his fight with the moral dilemma, but we find out that the conflict has little to do with survivors vs. vampires, but it is all about corporate corruption. Though not an Oscar quality screenplay, it isn’t no braindead action flick either, you put some thought into this one.

The visuals are really the only thing that give this film a “sci-fi” feel. Mostly the landscape is dark and lit by blues, giving it a mechanical glow. It shows that the vampires must live in the dark, but they aren’t digressing in technology. There’s this thing in which when a vampire is starved for blood they start to metamorph into a more feral bat-like creature, and here is where your monster magic comes in and it actually looks pretty decent, it is freaky looking enough and the screeching noise (especially when it’s loud enough, will make you jump), in an age in which CGI monsters look like crap, this one turned out pretty good. Where the film gets immature is with it’s horror elements of gore, I personally thought this was stupid and not truly necessary, but we got your body bits in here as well.

Acting was actually pretty well done, with some good performances from Ethan Hawke and Willem Defoe. I liked the character that Ethan Hawke portrayed, most protagonists in these kind of flicks are action types who aren’t afraid to jump in and stake a vamp, but Ethan’s character Edward (yes, I KNOW) is more a thinking man. Ethan keep to this thinking man character really well and it never looked like Edward would do some crazy stunt to get out of a situation, instead there was planning, and I say that is character I want to see. Willem Defoe does he usual weirdo bit and has a few one-liners that will make you chuckle. Bringing in this third element of comedy did make we go, what kind of tone should this movie be giving, because it’s really inconsistent. Isabel Lucas made her return to movies and gets more than like three lines that she had in Transformers 2 (she was the robot chick btw) instead she is a damsel-in-distress with daddy issues (still a step up from just being the hot chick).

So conclusion, I just thought this movie was alright, nothing groundbreaking here. And the coast is clear here, it’s not lame like Twilight in terms of vampire movies, but on that topic if you go see this off the current vampire craze, ummm you might be in for a surprise. If you got a few bucks and want to watch something, Daybreakers would be an alright choice.

2009 is coming to a close and I’m gonna kill as many of these year end countdown lists I can with a single post. So we’re gonna countdown the best of just about everything that happened in ‘09. If you weren’t bored of countdown lists before, you’ll sure as hell be bored of them after this…

Top 5 Video Games of ‘09

5. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3, Xbox 360, Windows)

There is totally this thing in which comic book games are always total surprise game of the year. Mostly because it is usually a game hashed together to promote the superhero movie of the year. But once in awhile there is a gem that stick outs and it turns out that Arkham Asylum is that gem. Combining stealth, action, and platforming into a package while presenting a new vision of the Batman universe. This game barely beat out Infamous as the best “hero” game of the year.

4. Assassin Creed II (PS3, Xbox 360, Windows)

The first one was good, but had it’s flaws. The developers went back and for once listened to its audience and fixed everything up. This is much more than you think it is as the game catapults itself as a game of the year contender. The visuals are stunning and the gameplay is still fantastic. Some games wish they had this good of a sequel.

3. Dragon Age: Origins (PS3, Xbox 360, Windows, OS X)

Are the guys at BioWare on crack or something, cause they’re trying to pump out three really good years in one year’s time and they’re actually doing it? Well before they release Mass Effect 2 or The Old Republic comes out, they released Dragon Age: Origins which is easily the RPG of the year. Apparently a lot of people wanted a sequel to the Balder’s Gate series and the announcement to this one is like dream come true to them. It’s good to know they still make good RPGs that aren’t just another MMO rip off anymore.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

You’re still playing this online and I’m still playing this online. If you’re playing Halo still, then you are a loser. It has an incredible single player experience be it short. The spec-opts mode was surprising good, but we’re all here for the multiplayer. PC players got the short end of the stick in this department, but on Live and the PS Network, other games are still trying to match the multiplayer that MW2 has put up. Only problem is there isn’t anything really new here and its short like MW.

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

It plays like an f’ing movie, there are games that are like movie, but this one plays like one. Like Assassin’s Creed 2, the developers went back and fixed all the problems in the first one, but unlike Creed they added new stuff as well. Uncharted 2 has reset the bar on game visuals. The multiplayer is pretty decent, but no one is playing it like MW2. The other thing you can say about Uncharted is it is the game that single handedly revived the PS3 from it’s ‘08 death and has set it up to dominate in ‘10. More people probably are playing MW2 now, but Uncharted 2 is still game of the year. Can’t believe this is made by the same guys behind the Jak and Crash Bandicoot games.

Top 5 Movies of ‘09 (that I’ve seen anyway)

5. (500) Days of Summer

OMG it’s a rom com that doesn’t suck. Mostly because this isn’t the normal romantic movie, as it is more of a get-over-the-girl kind of flick. Zooey Deschanel is still the queen of the indie flick and Joesph Gordon-Levitt is having a really good acting year. It is stylized in a way I can only call quirky and told in a non formal way that it makes it different. It won’t win an oscar or anything but to me it was one of the better movies of the summer and hey it’s out on DVD/Blu Ray now, so go rent it.

4. Inglourious Basterds

Oh Tarantino is good at making guy films. You’ve all seen World War II flick, yeah Basterds isn’t that movie. It is just a film all about badass-try. The performance by Christoph Waltz was strangely Oscar worthy, which is weird coming from a Tarantino flick. It isn’t thought provoking, but more than anything it’s just an enjoyable ride from beginning to the end. At no point will you be bored.

3. Star Trek

Some Trekkies are raging over this film, but a reboot was most needed and it actually paid off as it did what Iron Man did last year as the Blockbuster film of the year. The film was made a lot more accessible to the public (people who never watched sci-fi enjoyed it) and there was also a nostalgia factor created to make people reminisce about the original series. The cast dynamic was more incredible than anyone believe and Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have taken over as the new age Kirk and Spock. A new story, a new cast, a new director, a new style, but an old concept made this a great movie.

2. The Hangover

Spoiler: HE was on the roof the entire time. This movie year was one of surprises and The Hangover was the surprise comedy of the year. All we knew from the trailer was that there was tiger in the bathroom and you had to go see this. But the iffy thought in your mind was there’s been crazy bachelor party movies in the past what makes this one different? Well, the hangover of course, the act of putting the pieces together like solving a mystery combined with the hilarious scenarios the cast gets into makes a really good story. Once again amazing cast dynamic rules the day: the pretty boy Bradley Cooper, the comedic veteran Ed Helms, and everybody knows this guy now, Zach Galifianakis. Just like how Superbad was the must-see comedy of a few years ago, this is the new one.

1. District 9

I just love how this entire movie is just an F U to Hollywood. The exects of Hollywood were going to trash Neill Blomkamp’s attempt to make a Halo movie, but instead giving up he decided to use the measily budget he had and make an even better film. The actors were a bunch of nobodies, but they put up amazing performances and the CG wasn’t much, but it was better than the Michael Bay overload crapfest that was Transformers 2. The story was just something easy, it was what he knew and experience in South African aparteid, but told in a new way to make the audience able to connect. You know you’ve done something right when the audience is rooting for giant walking shrimp aliens. District 9 just brings cinema back to its basics and proves the audience will still find it entertaining. That’s why District 9 is my pick for movie of the year.

• Zombieland, a tossup between this one and The Hangover for best comedy of the year
• The Informant, Sherlock Holmes, Paranormal Activity, Whip It, The Blind Side, A Serious Man, Invictus, The Princess and the Frog, Precious, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Hurt Locker, Up in the Air  - all good films that I haven’t seen yet

As ‘09 rolls to a close, I guess I’ll do a shorter list that is more of a reflection of the year 2009 for me personally. We all have up’s and down’s as the days go by and let’s see what I can remember.

3. Losing My Wallet During the Freak Rain Storm

Yeah, that’s why I always check the weather before I leave the house now, because this was all on me. I decided to wait in a really long line to get football tickets to the Halloween Football game against UCLA. Was it worth it? Nope, it took 2 hours to wait in line and when I pulled out my wallet, since my leg was so numb from the cold rain coming down in torrents, I couldn’t feel if I put it back or not. Then I imagine a douchebag frat guy picks it up and walks away with it (and you really hope for Good Samaritans in the world, guess not).

2. My Laptop Dying Like 5 Days Ago

I hoped and prayed that this thing would last me until the summer and then die. But nooooo, it decides to black screen permanently now (black screening for me is when on startup it flickers once and then you can’t see anything, but if you hold it at an angle you tell it’s still running fine in the background). My laptop is kinda important to me, it is where I do this blog, the interRacials videos, and just the entertainment central of my life (yeah kinda sad really). The first thing to go out was the mic slot, then found out the graphics card was sucky, then ran out of space, then it couldn’t stand up straight, and finally it black screened. So yeah, f@#k you Dell.

1. “The Dorm Incident”

I still don’t want to talk much about this one and I don’t really want to offend anybody by talking about this one, mostly because I’ve moved on. But yeah this is the reason why I’m never living in the dorms again and this is why things weren’t the same for the rest of the last term of the year.

3. Starting This Blog

I’ve always wanted to do daily vlogs like the others on YouTube, but I really didn’t know what to do to talk about or make mine different from everyone else’s. Then one day I stumbled upon someone else’s blog and it was an interest blog and I thought hey I could do that. It still isn’t much, but the summer of ‘09 Everyday Blogs was an way to tell my closet friends about cool things that I’ve found out without having to repeat it over and over again to different people. Maybe in the future, I’ll try out vlogging for real, but for now I’ll keep a step behind in web 2.0 and keep this blog alive!

2. The TV Station

So far it’s just been one term of it, but working with KBVR for credit has been the most fun I’ve had at college in awhile (well not really the social side, but more the academic side). Besides the stress of actually getting the time needed to pass for the credit for the station, the stuff you do isn’t that hard and it’s pretty fun to do with other people in your major. And for the first time ever I actually feel like I’m contributing to the school in some way. I don’t really know where my major will take me, but I guess the more random skills I pick up the better. Unless something absolutely terrible happens I’m probably going to keep on doing this until my senior year, so whoo!

1. 2 Guys, 1 Wand

Our little summer project from interRacials video was our best yet. It’s not one of the better produced videos on the net and it’s not a viral vid of a cute kitty or a nut shot, but to us it’s the best thing ever. We’re getting better with every video we make, but because of the distance between the members it’s difficult to get our stuff out consistently. We hope to make another video before the break is over. To tell you guys the truth, I’m not sure how long the three of us can keep our group together, but if the others are in, I’ll always be.

Last Words for ‘09

To me 2009 was really meh, for me nothing is really getting any better and everything just feels dull. I hold onto every exciting moment that is presented to me, but it’s just not the same as it has been in the past. But being the optimist that I am, I really see good things happening in 2010. The 2000’s was just a landslide down of fail and heartbreak, but for the first time ever I think things might be going up for once…and it’s not just because Obama is in office.

Server’s Top Ten Countdown of ‘09

10. Love Game – Lady Gaga

Putting Gaga on here is more of a necessity than anything else. Everybody has heard a Gaga song sometime this year and it’s not just one, there are like 8 of them. She has to be doing something right? Just Dance was more from ‘08 though people didn’t start listening to it until ‘09. So it came down to Pokerface, Love Game, Paparazzi, or Bad Romance. I liked Love Game before anything else, but Pokerface is her most well-known song. Oh yeah and I heard something really interesting on a podcast recently that I might do a post on in the future, but think about this…could Lady Gaga just be a stage character? And one final thing..what the f#*k is a disco stick?

9. You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift

Yeeeah, this is just the taylor-maniac in me. ‘09 was Miss Swift’s year and she made up believe that she is America’s princess or something like that. It wasn’t until You Belong With Me that I decided to find out what the fuss was all about and I finally listened to Fearless. Swift is probably the most country that I will ever listen to, I don’t think I can handle anything beyond it. The music video proves once again apparently if you take the glasses off a nerdy girl she becomes like super-hot (might be some truth in this, maybe).

8. Use Somebody – Kings of Leon

Well I liked Kings of Leon too world so they get to be on my top ten list also. According to my own rules, Use Somebody should be on the Best of ‘08 list, but I’m jumping on the bandwagon and throwing it on my list. It’s not even my most favorite song off the album (that would go to the closely named Be Somebody), but this one actually has a music video. But don’t get me wrong Only by the Night is one of the best albums of ‘09. Also its one of the few albums that I enjoyed from beginning to end. The question is, will I ever go back and listen to their old stuff, answer is – most likely yes if I got the time. Good job to the Followill boys on an amazing album.

7. Substitution – Silversun Pickups

Swoon is the sophomore album from the rising indie rock band the Silversun Pickups. Mostly known for their one single Lazy Eye from a few years back. It was really tough to pick between their two top singles from the new album, it was between Substitution or Panic Switch. Really, both should be on this top ten list. Most likely these guys will never get the mainstream coverage they deserve, but maybe it’s better than way. They’ll never have to sell out like the bigger bands. But enough of that rant, they have a really unique sound and they’re really good at it. Hope to hear more from them in the future.

6. Medicate – AFI

When I found out AFI was releasing a new album, I had to see if it was any good. Medicate proved one thing, AFI got a lot less emo and more The Killers-ish. Their guitars are just fantastic on this song especially the solo at the end. This song could’ve been ranked higher, but I never actually listened to the rest of Crash Love (mostly off of laziness). So yeah, should totally get on that.

5. Good Girls Go Bad - Cobra Starship feat. Leighton Meester

I really really liked Cobra Starship this summer. And it was a tough one to choose which song was best for ‘09. But because I want to do a countdown with actual music videos, I’ll go with Good Girls Go Bad over Move Like Your Gonna Die. So if the public didn’t know Cobra from the Snakes on a Plane song or the Hey Mister DJ song, they’ll know them from this one. Also in a double whammy, miss Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl fame gets to show us if she can sing (pretty meh, but better than most).  Why like Cobra? Cause they make funny music videos, their music is good, and they make you want to dance even if you can’t.

4. Ignorance – Paramore

Many pop punk bands, like Paramore, seem to be able to make only one good album, then completely change their sound to something horrendous and fail miserably their sophomore run. Technically Brand New Eyes is their third album, but it is the follow-up to Riot! which launched them mainstream. And surprise to me, it didn’t disappoint. I found Ignorance a few months before the album release and it got me in the right mindset to accept what was coming. Careful and Brick by Boring Brick are great tracks and later into the album they experiment with ballads that actually work. So kudos to you Hayley and the gang, here’s waiting on your next music video.

3. 1901 – Phoenix

Pretty much a surprise find for me this past year. SNL introduced me to them when they still showcased indie bands for their show. It was just in time for the release of their ‘09 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It was a toss-up between 1901 and their other big single Listzomania. With their almost electro-indie rock mix sound and really catchy lyrics, Phoenix barely beats out Kings of Leon as my favorite new band of ‘09 (well new to me anyway).

2. Uprising – Muse

Muse’s new album, The Resistance, was hyped to me by YouTuber Supadupaflygirl for the past year and when it finally came out, yeah it was worth the hype. Muse consistently has released good music and they do have a pretty long discography. Uprising somehow has become the “it” track for TV as they use it for just about any promo they want: the new show V, college football intro, comedy sitcoms. If you haven’t listened to The Resistance, you’re really missing out.

1. Weightless – All Time Low

For some reason, All Time Low turned out to be my favorite band of 2009 after the release of their newest album, Nothing Personal. Everything on it was fun to listen to. Weightless was my favorite track and it was also the debut track for the album. The music video pokes fun of themselves along with their contemporaries and yes, the origin of their music totally is Blink-182. This was a great bounce-back from All Time Low and I hope their popularity grows and overtakes Fall Out Boy (who just kinda suck these days).

Should’ve Made It Top 20…

I most likely forgot some song that I really liked this year. And there were a few outliers that could’ve broken through. I’ll just list off what I can remember and comment on if you disagree or agree or whatever. 2010 looks to continue with good music, whoo 2010!

Winter Blogs on Hiatus

So yeah yesterday I couldn’t post my usual winter vacation post and I’ll probably won’t be able to for the rest of the break. My laptop finally met it’s end and even though it works, I can’t see anything on the screen. So the winter blogs are on hiatus unless I get on another computer. This really sucks cause I still had more interesting posts to do…oh wellz. Hope to keep this going again spring vacation.

Double Crush Girl of the Week: Amber Heard & Emma Stone

In holiday laziness I didn’t really want to come up with a creative post idea, so I’m doing Crush Girl of the Week a day early this week. And in my own little gift to you all it’s will be a double crush girl. Overwhelming you with their hotness are the rising stars from teen flicks, Amber Heard and Emma Stone. So here we go Amber first and Emma second.

Amber Heard

-Her birthday falls on April 22nd

-Amber’s parents are David and Paige Heard, who are a contractor and internet researched respectively, she also has two sisters one is named Whitney

-Amber was raised Catholic and attended St. Michael’s Academy in Austin, Texas until her junior year when she dropped out

-While in school she was very active in her school’s drama department and even starred in some local commercials, when she dropped out she moved to New York to model, but eventually headed west to LA to pursue acting (yes, she is one of THOSE people)

-Her acting career started with small roles on the shows Jack & Bobby, The Mountain, Criminal Mind, and even one episode of The O.C.

They’re Totally Overdoing It With Guitar Games

Before the holiday game release season there were these guitar games: Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 2, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock, Rock Band, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80’s, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: On Tour, Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades, Guitar Hero On Tour: Modern Hits, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, Guitar Hero Mobile, and Rock Band Unplugged. Did I miss one? So, guitar games are predicted to be on their last leg, there isn’t even any announcements of Guitar Hero 6 or Rock Band 3 yet. Which means, video game companies are going to milk this thing for all it’s worth. So here is this holiday season’s guitar games and a few announced for next year.

Guitar Hero 5 (PS2, PS3, XBox 360, Wii)

This one is the “official” fifth-quel in the Guitar Hero series and probably the only one on this list that you should buy if you don’t own any guitar game yet (come on, like you haven’t bought one yet). What’s new about this one (which was added to all of the suceeding Guitar Hero games) is “Party Play” which let’s anyone enter or leave the song while it’s going and having all the songs on a playlist. You are also able to use any combination of 4 instruments to play (guitar, bass, vocals, drums). They also changed unlockables into a series of challenges instead of beat a serie of songs. But besides that, it’s the same formula they’ve been going with ever since game 1.

The Beatles: Rock Band (PS3, XBox 360, Wii)

Good job Harmonix’s you guys got The Beatles license, which took seemed impossible to obtain years ago, now let’s make a Rock Band game. This is the first band specific version in the Rock Band franchise. It is basically the same as all the other Rock Band games, but it let’s you hook up 3 mics only because most Beatles songs have harmonies. Though like Guitar Hero Metallica, it isn’t too bad of a guitar game for being all about one band. The Beatles are well known and widely popular enough for this one to sell.

Notable Songs: Hello Goodbye, I Am The Walrus, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Twist and Shout, Yellow Submarine all by The Beatles, duh.

Buy It?: Only if you like The Beatles, then why would you even care

DJ Hero (PS2, PS3, XBox 360, Wii)

I was very skeptical about this last summer when they made the announcement of DJ Hero. It seemed like an attempt to get the hip hop audience with the Guitar Hero franchise, but I was wrong. DJ Hero turned out with to be a surprise with the right feel to match DJ culture along with awesome mash-ups made by the industries best DJ’s (including Tiesto, Daft Punk and DJ Shadow). Also I thought that only three buttons on the controller would make it too easy, but it combines enough functionality to make it right difficulty.The only thing is, being the first in the series it doesn’t have the depth the lastest Guitar Hero games have. But by the second installment, things should be getting good.

Notable Songs: Anything that mashes with Daft Punk or Justice

Buy It?: Totally, it’s a new experience, just like when you play Guitar Hero for the first itme

Band Hero (PS2, PS3, Wii, XBox 360, DS)

Everything new they added onto Guitar Hero 5 is in this one. This one is just packaged in a “family friendly” design, which is really really stupid. I think it also loses the “create a song” fucntion that was in World Tour and 5, but that’s still pretty clunky anyways. The thing that bugs me is they try to include a bunch of songs that aren’t “rock”. I was playing through the demo just to see how bad it was, I was using the guitar controller and a bunch of the notes don’t coincide which the same instrument being played in the game (how does a guitar control the trumpets or the banjos).You get about 20 songs less than Guitar Hero 5 and many of the songs get awkwardly censored to keep it “family friendly”. So yeah, if “family friendly” and rock never mixed well before, why should it now?

Notable Songs: Bring Me to Life by Evanescene, Don’t Speak by No Doubt, Naïve by The Kooks, You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift, Hang Me Up to Dry by Cold War Kids

Buy It?: F*#k No!, see they even have me censoring myself, even the fact that Taylor Swift is in the game isn’t worth it

Lego Rock Band (PS3, XBox 360, Wii, DS)

I love the rock band series and I love legos, but even I think this was a bad idea. So this game is just like any other Rock Band except it’s been lego-ized. All the characters, backgrounds, and game functions are in some way lego. Like Band Hero, this one is also going for the “family friendly” market. Unlike Band Hero, their track listing mostly remains rock instead of Top 40, but the track listing remains small at 45 and there is backwards compatibility/downloaded content that has been picked as “age appropriate”. For me the “lego” of this game would get boring within 5 seconds and just become annoying.

Buy It?: Not as bad as Band Hero, but still it’s going to have to be NO!!!

Guitar Hero: Van Halen

This was actually released yesterday and no one really knew it was coming out. This is the third band specific Guitar Hero title after the fail Aerosmith and the more sucessful Metallica. It is missing the new features that Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero has, but it has animated Van Halen band members at least? The non-Van Halen songs that are included seem random (Foo Fighters, Weezer, Blink-182,Yellowcard?), there should be more 80’s bands, but I guess they don’t want repeats. All in all, this doesn’t have the quality of Guitar Hero Metallica instead it is a messed together mess of a guitar game with the Guitar Hero and Van Halen names slapped on top. And personally I don’t think Van Halen is a big enough band to hold their own game.

Buy It?: Stores should take all the copies of this game, go into the parking lot and make a community bon fire with a local band playing in the background, and then never speak of this game again

Like I said they are going to milk this thing for all it’s worth so here’s what has been announced for the coming year in guitar games so far…

Green Day Rockband (2010)

This one could work, Green Day is the pioneer of the punk rock music in the 90’s and they do have a long enough discography to encapsulate an entire game and like Metallica they are still active today. If Rockband can do what they did to The Beatles and make improvments, then I’ll be raging less with guitar games. So far most of the tracks off of 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot have been confirmed.

Guitar Hero 6 (In Development)

Don’t expect major changes. Guitar Hero is becoming almost like the Madden football franchise, they’ll pump one out every year and the only thing different will be the songs. There might be one new tweak, but that’s all I’m expecting. It also seems with no new contracts being made with the better bands, they’re totally running out of good songs to play. There is rumors that 6 might include the new tech found in Project Natal or PS3’s Motion Controller.

Guitar Hero: Hendrix (Rumor)

This is totally a rumor from an interview with Slash by Rolling Stone magazine. Jimi Hendrix is definitely a legend of rock, but all of his good songs were already taken and he’s an unlockable character in Guitar Hero World Tour.

This is all that is announced right now, but expect the big reveals to happen this summer at the next E3.

interRacials Review: Avatar

OK, all three of us finally got down to watching Avatar, the so-called must see movie of the winter movie season and James Cameron’s latest masterpiece. But is it as amazing like they want us to think or is it a flop. interRacials Reviews is on the case!

Server’s Review-

Yep, still not sure why James Cameron always take so long to make movies, but he seems to make them alright. Right off the bat, the first thing you instantly notice about Avatar that it is a visual masterpiece. The trailer made the movie look like cheap video game graphics, but the movie itself was much much more stunning. I spent most of the film taking in the atmosphere and looking at all the nooks and crannies of the world. And that brand new camera thing Cameron invented was actually worth it, because he finally nailed down the real/3-D overlapping (especially since Polar Express and Beowulf looks horrendous). I ended up watching the non-3D version of this film, but Deej did and he says it might not be worth it, because it’s hard to catch all the 3D effects that are thrown at you.

Storywise it isn’t anything special. It’s the done before story of a main character loyal to one group is sent to infiltrate another group, and he eventually changes side (the plot of The Last Samurai or Disney’s Tarzan). Cameron does a decent job of explaining the in’s and out’s of world he created. There are some holes, but they can be mostly overlooked. There also seems to be enviromentalist undertones laced throughout this film. I’m getting annoyed that my movies are getting taken over by hippies.

It’s hard to judge acting in this film since most of them are animated. I did like the performances from Zoe Saldana as Neytiri and Stephen Lang as the main antagonist Col. Miles Quaritch. But for Lang this is just the same role he usual does (the angry general). And we are robbed of Saldana’s hotness (she was Uhura in Star Trek) as she is animated this entire film.

Anyways this is a must see film especially if you are a sci-fi fan. Throughout the film, you just feel like you got to give James Cameron props for making something that looks this good. It will be an Oscar contender, but I don’t feel that it deserves to win, probably for Best Director and definitely Best Cinematography.
